Blinded By The White: 2016 Color Trends Continued

If you’re seeing white this winter, it’s not just out your window. Look inward, and you’ll discover that simple, clean lines rule this season, thanks in part to the powers that be at heavy weights from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore to Pantone.

If these design giants have anything to say, off whites and neutral palettes are the colors of the moment, and the trend for 2016.

Lest you think white is the easy way out, these brands offer a host of reasons for choosing Simply White (Benjamin Moore’s 2016 color of the year) and Alabaster (Sherwin Williams’ shade du jour).

Not only do these hues work to create a soft ambiance, bringing focus and zeroing in on nuance and subtlety, but they also refresh and energize, offering equal parts solace and revival.

Get The Look

Crisp white walls provide the perfect setting for creative homeowners to experiment. Accessories are an easy way to add color and allow for a quick change or a simple update for the seasons.

Try these 12 tricks to let white rule in your home:

  • Install mirror-fronted cabinets to let both the white – and natural light – reflect for maximum impact.
  • Use different shades of white to add interest and break up the starkness of a solid white room.
  • Contrast is key. Ground all of that white with dark cabinets, floors and trim. Or choose one element to stand out – the center island, or a corner nook in a dark walnut finish perhaps, to draw the eye.
  • Add a vase of flowers on the kitchen counter or bathroom vanity for a refreshing pop of color.
  • Let natural light in. Leave large windows uncovered and paint the ceiling the same shade of white as the walls to draw eyes up.
  • Clean white walls let even the most delicate details stand out; go vintage in your bathroom with a claw-foot tub or add soft, feminine chairs to your kitchen table.
  • Add dimension and texture with different types of tile; subway tile mingles well with marble floor tile, for example.
  • A mosaic floor tile will carry natural light and add a glow to an all-white bathroom.
  • Use texture (a woven area rug perhaps) to bring interest to what otherwise might be a dull space.
  • Bring in pattern and a hint of color with a natural quartz or granite countertop.
  • Choose cabinet and drawer pulls in contemporary metals; brass fixtures add timeless character against a pale backdrop.
  • Create patterns in the backsplash, and use color in fabrics on the windows and seating.

While white kitchens are not an entirely new trend – we wrote about them in our 25 years of trends article – there are ways to update the style for 2016 to keep it fresh. What makes it current is in the details.

Play with patterns and finishes, and most importantly, stick to your instincts. If it makes you happy, go for it!
