Few building materials are as customizable as tile. From tiny colorful mosaics to textured stacks of stone, tiles are the tools you need to make a dramatic decorating statement. And while we’ll always hold a place in our hearts for simple, rectangular subway tile, we challenge you to look past the old standby and embrace the unconventional. Let’s go crazy!

Tile: The Options Are Endless

First, keep in mind that we use the term “tile” to refer to a type of product, not the material of the product. Like puzzle pieces, tiles come in all shapes and sizes – herringbone and hexagonal, small and large – and are designed to fit together oh-so-beautifully.

Tile of any size makes a big statement, especially in the form of a backsplash. And when it comes to product selection, ProSource has your back. Our showrooms have hundreds of options at wholesale prices and dedicated account managers to assist you through the process. And anyone can browse our more than 4,400 options online anytime and from anywhere.

Consider The Big Picture

With so many options, it’s easy to get caught up in the minutiae of selecting the perfect tile. Even after you’ve narrowed it down to “some kind of blue glass tile,” you may find yourself overwhelmed by your options. Before you drown in the details, consider taking a step back to look at the big picture.

Think about the old saying, “You can’t see the forest for the trees.” When you focus on just the type of tile, you lose sight of the potential to create something spectacular, like that one-of-a-kind backsplash.

And we use the term “backsplash” loosely. In the kitchen, it typically refers to that wall area between the counter and the cabinets. But backsplashes certainly are not limited to kitchens or even to walls! They’re popular for bathrooms (envision a custom shower), entertainment areas (a wicked awesome bar), dining rooms (behind an antique buffet), and living rooms (a colorful fireplace surround).

A design post by Decoist.com offers outstanding examples of artistic tile backsplashes, walls, floors, and more.  And our own Inspiration gallery features amazing tile designs by ProSource members. Their secret? Changing up the way tile was done in the past for a no-holds-barred approach to using tile throughout the home.

This Way, Not That Way

Even the most traditional tile can be used to create a contemporary backsplash. All it takes is a little imagination. “Placing tiles vertically rather than the expected horizontal orientation adds a fresh touch to a room with a transitional design style,” say the experts at Case Design of San Jose. Most of us would look at a sample of this tile and never consider turning it 90 degrees.

By altering the direction of just some of the tiles in a Mediterranean Kitchen, Case Design created a charming focal point that looks quilted in texture. Achieve your own European flair with decorative tile medallions or detail-rich tile chair rail from ProSource.

Mix Colors For Major Impact

The Case design team created a dramatic color display with bold blue mosaic tiles against white. Standard white square tiles are placed diagonally rather than in a straight line. The magnificent color contrasting takes this space to a new level of wow. And those occasional specks of blue? Genius.

Create A Monochromatic Masterpiece

This bathroom features a focal point that would work equally well in the kitchen. Use this inspiration to combine glass, stone, ceramic, and porcelain tiles in your favorite hue. ProSource makes it easy to shop by color: brights, neutrals, earth tones, metallics, and everything in between!

Or, instead of using a variety of media in one color, consider using the same color on your walls as you do on countertops.  ProSource of Wichita was behind a seamless work of art from the granite to the backsplash. With 30 fabulous colors of granite and highly qualified trade pro members all across North America, we make it easy to make that dream space happen.
