It’s that exciting time when major paint players announce their Colors of the Year. For 2019, there’s a departure from the bright, arresting colors of recent years toward muted, understated shades. Color experts describe their versatile selections as “happy” and “peaceful” in an era of uncertainty and unease. Find out how to incorporate one (or all!) of 2019’s stars into your next project.
Night Watch by PPG Paints®
Is it black or is it green? PPG’s Night Watch PPG1145-7 is a magnificent blend of both. Belonging to the “Aquas” color family, this “black-infused green” brings a natural element to any space – commercial, healthcare, or residential. It’s the one 2019 Color of the Year that’s reminiscent of 2018’s boldness.
“The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” says PPG Senior Color Marketing Manager Dee Schlotter. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”
This color of the year is perfect on an accent wall in a bedroom or dining room. For non-residential settings, it can be used in windowless spaces to bring in the calm of the outdoors. Night Watch is a luxe alternative to last year’s black trend.
Create an impactful aesthetic with Night Watch on the walls and complementary carpeting underfoot. Duraweave Highwood carpet comes in an array of gorgeous options, including Antique Shoppe, Spent Candle, Frozen Expanse, and Hearthstone. See them all online or at your local ProSource showroom.

Cavern Clay by Sherwin-Williams® Sherwin-Williams’ Cavern Clay SW 7701 brilliantly blends midcentury modern style with a southwestern aesthetic. Pair this earthy shade with other casual neutrals for cozy results.
Sherwin-Williams selected Cavern Clay SW 7701 from the collection of 2019 “color journals” (i.e., color palettes) put together by a team of experts and Director of Color Marketing Sue Wadden. The lovely terracotta hue pays tribute to the canyons, beaches, and deserts of the great Southwest.
“The 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay, is an ancient, elemental color and is a nod to ‘desert modern’ and ‘new west’ styles that will be everywhere in 2019,” says Wadden. “It is an evolution of the modern farmhouse aesthetic and a representation of the American Southwest that can be easily translated to various interiors.”
Wadden forecasts a shift toward warmer colors in 2019, and says “Cavern Clay is a beloved desert tone that’s being embraced because of its bohemian and Southwestern flair.” She recommends pairing this southwestern take on a midcentury modern color “with other natural pinks, reds, and creamy whites to make a room feel more authentic and cohesive without feeling too matchy.”
This warm, earthy color looks fabulous with bright tiles, rustic stone, and cheery greenery. In the kitchen, Cavern Clay provides a spectacular backdrop for Beckett kitchen cabinets in Alabaster. Take a closer look at these fresh, yet refined, cabinets at the ProSource showroom nearest you.

Pineapple Cream Granita by Ace Hardware®
For the very first time, an Ace Hardware consumer mixed, created, and named the much-anticipated color of the year. Pineapple Cream Granita, the official 2019 Clark+Kensington Color of the Year, was developed during the company’s Neighborhood Paint Party in March 2018. Ace customers submitted their creations to a panel of color experts, who narrowed the entries to 25 finalists. More than 35,000 consumers voted via social media for their favorite and ultimately selected the airy yellow shade as the winner.
“When I created this color, I was daydreaming about enjoying a delicious dessert while on a relaxing vacation in Sicily with my daughter,” said Pineapple Cream Granita’s creator. “The color is soothing and yet bright; sweet with just a bit of tartness.”
It’s not a tasty cocktail, but Pineapple Cream Granita is a delightful color addition to any space. In the nursery, this cheerful yellow is a wonderful complement to muted grays or soft whites. In the kitchen, it evokes a mid-century feel – something one might find on a countertop, vinyl stool, or even an appliance.
Try Pineapple Cream Granita in a home office for a special dose of happiness. Temper the yellow with a rich, dark hardwood floor, such as Armstrong Deep Java engineered hickory hardwood. Or create a holistic haven with a gentle, light wood like Mohawk solid hardwood flooring in Pure Maple Natural. ProSource has hundreds of hardwood flooring options – both solid and engineered – for creating the perfect foundation.

Blueprint by Behr®
Behr’s 2019 Color of the Year is Blueprint S470-5, “an honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life.” Along with this new, denim shade come four new color palettes: monochromatic Color Binge, Down to Earth earthy tones, Soft Focus pastels, and Inspired Curation jewel tones.
Behr created Blueprint as a versatile shade that works on walls, ceilings, trim, or as an accent. As a pair of jeans, it would be “that perfect middle-of-the-road blue denim – not too dark, not too light – slightly worn to keep it comfortable, but with enough color to be easily dressed up.” As paint, “you can go casual, modern, country, formal, moody, light, you name it – all possible with this color.”

Garden Patch by Dutch Boy®
Dutch Boy's Garden Patch 326-5DB is a “nostalgic, botanical hue” and part of the Homestead palette. It captures the feeling of simple living and pairs beautifully with soft neutrals and pops of gentle color for a serene space.
“All of our colors for 2019 have a happier tone and reflect an upswing in how people are feeling,” says Dutch Boy Paints Color and Design Manager Rachel Skafidas. “Even colors that are traditionally on the cooler side of the palette have a level of warmth and happiness than what we’ve seen in the recent past.”
The grassy green Garden Patch, “not too deep and not too primary,” works effortlessly with each of Dutch Boy Paints new palettes: Studio, with bold, primary colors; Sanctuary, with calm, muted shades; and Homestead, with warm, natural tones.
In the bedroom or guest room, Garden Patch creates a comfortably welcoming haven. The color is subtle enough to be used on all four walls yet striking enough to create a focal point behind a headboard or fireplace. Both carpet and wood flooring work with this unexpectedly versatile green.

Living Coral by Pantone®
Providing a unique expression for color of the year options, Pantone selected 16-1546 Living Coral for 2019. Vibrant yet mellow, playful while warm, and all-around fun are terms that leap to mind with this choice. Reading as poetic prose, it's defined as an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.
Representing the fusion of modern life, Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in natural surroundings, while at the same time it displays a lively presence within social media. Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of color found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind.
For a kids room, it’s the perfect option as its engaging nature welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. It embodies the desire for playful expression. It only a little is desired, it resonates well as an accent within a space.
“Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral," says Leatrice Eiserman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive cord.”
