Tell us about your business.
I’m a home builder. I always have one spec, and one or two custom homes, going at the same time.
How did you get started in business?
I’ve been in the home building business for 25 years, being on my own for the last nine. I received a degree in construction management, and my first job was with a home builder. I just kind of stayed with it.
I had always worked for custom home builders, but found the quality in my market wasn’t up to my personal standard.
What trends do you see in home design and remodeling?
A lot of people are going simpler and cleaner. For example, more subway tile and less deco tile. They’re getting away from browns in hardware. The last house I did had some grey tones. I’m more eclectic. I like a timeless entry and home exterior. On the inside, I’ll mix contemporary and classic.
Why do homeowners choose you? What sets your business apart?
I’m pretty good at what I do. I build a superior product. My motto is, "Attention to Detail.” I design all of my homes myself, and draw my own plans. This ensures each home has the look and feel I require. Regardless of the size of the project, I want it to radiate quality.
That’s why I like to have a spec house at all times. When people come to me, they want the Eric Madsen look, outside and inside. Everything is proportionate. You can see that I didn’t cut any corners.
What brings you the most satisfaction in your work?
I’m really particular about my houses’ street appeal. That’s my number-one concern. They have to ooze quality from the street. Proportions and textures are so vitally important to home building. That’s why I like to draw my own plans.
What’s the most valuable benefit of being a ProSource Wholesale Member?
Cheryl, my account manager, understands me. I don’t waste time there. When I choose materials for a spec house, it’s a collaboration between Cheryl and me. I’m in and out in an hour and a half.
If it’s a custom job, my homeowners come in and meet with Cheryl. The showroom looks very professional, and they have all the samples. Cheryl knows what I typically recommend to my clients, so it’s an extra hand to help them in a good direction.
