7 Ways to Add Warmth to Your Fireplace

The main purpose of a fireplace may be to provide warmth, but it’s also a great location for adding style to your room. A fireplace is the perfect place to create an unexpected focal point. And there are countless ways to make yours stand out.

Here are seven ways to make your fireplace the focal point of your room.

1. Create A Tile Surround

It’s hardworking and low maintenance, which keeps it at the top of homeowners’ lists of favorites. Smaller, decorative tiles can even be used to build a fireplace mantel.

Create interest with a stone, metal or ceramic chair rail and continue the tile above the mantel to draw the eye upward. This will make the ceiling appear higher and give your fireplace a sense of grandeur.

2. Add Color

Who says your fireplace has to be red brick, white marble or black granite? An unexpected color can add impact to your room. Bright yellow brings in the outdoors, smooth green pops in neutral surroundings, and bright blue sparkles along with the slow flames from inside.

3. It’s (Also) What’s Inside That Counts

Don’t stop decorating at the mantel and surround. Carry the inlay of bricks to the inside of the fireplace to give fire logs a beautiful backdrop on which to burn.

And in warm weather, place unexpected objects inside to keep the focal point interesting. A dried flower arrangement or a soft round assortment of fabric or yarn brings contrast to the hard, straight lines of a fireplace opening.

4. Go Bold

Draw eyes upwards with a gorgeous piece of artwork above the mantel. Don’t be afraid to choose an oversized print or decorative piece, and add overhead lighting to highlight your design.

5. Don’t Neglect The Base

Add colorful tile to the base of your fireplace. Not only will this protect your floors from loose sparks, but a colorful pattern will draw the eye in and create interest.

6. Think Outside The Box

If you have the ability, extend the typical square or rectangular fireplace into an extra wide shape that takes up more wall space. Not only will this help the fireplace stand out, but it will also spread the warmth farther across the room.

7. Dress It Up

Fireplace screens serve double duty by protecting your flooring and your family and adding to the décor of your room. Antique stores and estate sales can provide a wealth of treasures to discover.
