How Long Does A Kitchen Remodel Take?

Tricks of the Trade is an article series dedicated to providing answers to commonly asked questions. The interviews are conducted with ProSource Wholesale® trade professional members, looking to offer their insights and experience to these thoughts that arise during the building or remodeling process.

Glenda Underwood is the owner of Interior Answers and a designer member at ProSource of Birmingham (AL).

There are a variety of factors that help determine how long a kitchen remodel will take, but the most significant one tends to be product timelines. How quickly we can get the products we need really informs how long the remodel might take.

That said, the typical kitchen remodel takes around twelve weeks.

This starts with a meeting with a client, where I get some of the background information about the existing space. Are there drains in the sink? Does the stove run on electric or natural gas? How many outlets do they have? These are the types of questions that I need answered in order to move forward. They’re just as important as their style preferences.

After all of that background on the space and style ideas are discussed, we go to ProSource and begin picking out the products for the project. From there, my team and I can begin the demolition of the existing kitchen, and while that can change, depending on how much of the kitchen is being redone, typically we tear it all out – cabinets, countertops, and flooring.

With product timelines, you may have a specific type of countertop that could take longer to be delivered. The remodel doesn’t stop just because that product’s timeline. We’ve got to keep moving with other parts of the project.

ProSource is awesome and really helps me expedite those products to the best of their abilities. If a product has been ordered but cannot be fulfilled, they’re the first ones to reach out to see if there’s another store that carries it or find an alternative to recommend to the client. They’re always there to help me. They’re wonderful.

I also have an amazing team of workers that help execute the design. We take our time and do each project in the stages needed because it has to be done in order. For instance, you get the countertop, then it’s time for the plumber to come in. Next, our electrician comes in and does all of the lighting under the counter and cabinet lines. Then the appliances go in, while the gas has to be connected to the stove.

It is a process, and you need professionals in your remodel to build upon each step of the process. By relying on pros, my clients leave this experience incredibly satisfied. I get cards and text from former clients saying what a great job my team and I did, and then they refer me to friends and family. That’s how you know that they’re truly satisfied.
